Understand Xanax Addiction & the Need for Treatment

If you have anxiety, there's a chance you've taken a medication like Xanax or Klonopin at some point, in order to better manage your symptoms. These drugs, which are classified as benzodiazepines, can help relieve symptoms of anxiety by suppressing your nervous system, so that you can calm down and go about your day. It is important to keep in mind, though, that Xanax and other drugs have side effects — even if you just take them occasionally. The thing is, many people get a prescription and keep a bottle in their pocket for moments when they feel too anxious. But even if you just take a pill "every now and again," you can still experience side effects. And, in many cases, it's all too easy to become carried away, take too many, and even become dependent on the drug over time. If you're going to take drugs like Xanax, it's important to do so carefully and mindfully — and supplement your anxiety treatment with other things like therapy, healthy amounts of exercise, and plenty of sleep. "The best way to use these medications is definitely under the supervision of your doctor, and being honest with all of your doctors about your prescriptions," Erin Parisi, LMHC, CAP, a licensed mental health counselor and certified addictions professional, tells Bustle. Xanax (alprazolam) is an anti-anxiety medication in the benzodiazepine family, the same family that includes diazepam (Valium), clonazepam (Klonopin), lorazepam (Ativan), flurazepam (Dalmane), and others. Xanax slows down the movement of brain chemicals that may have become unbalanced, resulting in a reduction in nervous tension and anxiety. She fumbled for her phone but couldn't think clearly enough to text for help."I felt these horrible jolts running through my head and body; I couldn't stop jerking," she recalled. "Then I began seeing stuff that wasn't there, creepy-crawly things. I didn't know what was happening, but I worried I might be dying."The previous morning Jenna, then 33, had inexplicably woken up shaking."I'm usually pretty confident and outgoing, but I felt like I couldn't leave my apartment," she said. My boss noticed the shaking and was concerned; I told him I wasn't sure what it was and I went home early."There, things got worse. Her twitching intensified, and she grew increasingly confused.

I just started with generic zoloft for anxiety/panic. i have been taking one every nightm cause it been really hard to fall asleep and stay the past few days i have been breaking the pill in half and taking during the day when my anxiety gets bad i think maybe a side effect of the zoloft . im worried about getting addicted to them, even though the psych dr and my therapist both said to take them when i need them instead of i have read that people take is 3-4 times daily to help them, so that makes me feel like im doing ok with the you think at this rate it will get me to be addicted if i have to continue taking them for the next few weeks until the zoloft takes effect? I think if you get to the pont you don't need them and talk to the doc, they will just ween you off them. You aren't taking enough right now that I think it will hurt anything. But as long as you are not craving them and I see you are not I really believe you will be fine. Plus you don't seen to have an addtive personality. My doc thinks xanax is a wonderful med as long as you don't abuse it and with your personality you are not going to do that. Von Hi turkee25, I'm glad you're taking some meds that seem to be working for you. Usually your doctor will start you out on the lowest dose just to start you out, and to see how well you do, and to get your body used to having the medication. It usually takes about a few weeks to get the full effect of the meds. :) You're just getting started, so its going to take a little time. Xanax, a brand name for alprazolam, is a powerful benzodiazepine that is only recommended for use for up to six weeks. Despite that, American physicians continue to refill prescriptions at often alarming rates. As a result, the number of people seeking treatment for primary benzo addictions continues to rise — from 6,929 in 2002 to 17,019 a decade later in 2012, according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. Some people who are dependent on Xanax never abused drugs before. They were suffering from anxiety and looking to the medical field for support and relief. They started using Xanax and felt a vast improvement in symptoms. Some then assumed more of the drug would produce an even greater effect, so they misused it in larger doses.
